1940s ~ B.K.S. Iyengar Through The Decades
By the 1940’s B.K.S. Iyengar was performing asana demonstrations throughout India. The Iyengar method (as his teachings later became known ) emphasizes precise alignment in the postures combined with an attitude of reflection and absorption .
He introduced teaching yoga to groups and was a pioneer in teaching yoga to women. His ten hour a day practices strained his nerves to the maximum but he persevered. His practice began to pay rewards in the 1940’s as his classes gained in popularity. Many medical people began to refer patients to his classes as he began to adapt classical yoga poses to the special needs of each student.
It was during this decade, in 1943, that he married his wife Ramamani. Together they would go on to raise 5 daughters and one son.
