Yogi Jessamyn Stanley wants to show that yoga is for everyone, regardless of shape, size or your background.
It’s not just the preserve of those ‘typical slender yoga bodies’ she argues.
The 27-year-old from North Carolina describes herself on Instagram as a ‘yoga enthusiast and fat femme’. After trying Bikram yoga for the first time in 2011, she now practises it daily and shares her progress on her page with her 42,000 followers.
‘A lot of curvy people who practice yoga have defined limits in terms of how far they’re willing to go,’ she told People earlier this year after her page started to take off.
She adds: ‘They think they can probably do downward dog or tree pose, but they’re not going to try headstands or handstands. They’ll say, “I’m too fat”.’
Jessamyn’s moves are way more complex than a downward dog, and she admits they take a certain level of body confidence.
