December 14, 1918: Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja (B.K.S) Iyengar born in the village of Bellur, in the Kolar District of the state of Karnataka, southern India.

1934: Iyengar (Guruji) is introduced to yoga at the age of 16 by his Guru Sri T. Krishnamacharya.

1936: Sent to Pune, Maharashtra by his guru to teach yoga

1943: Guruji marries Ramamani. The couple goes on to have six children: five daughters – Geeta, Vinita, Suchita, Sunita and Savitha – and one son, Prashant.

1952: Guruji meets violin maestro Yehudi Menuhin, who is instrumental in introducing the Western World to Guruji.

1966: Publication of Guruji’s teachings in Light on Yoga. This book has been translated into 18 languages.

1975: Inauguration of the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, named after Guruji’s wife, Smt. Ramamani Iyengar.

December 2003: Guruji teaches hundreds of his students who have come to Pune from all over the world to celebrate his 85th birthday.

August 20, 2014: He died in Pune, India from heart failure and renal failure, aged 95.
