  • What happens to the body in backbends?
  • How does the diaphragm, and therefore our breath, affect our ability to stretch and extend our spine backwards?

Yoga, Workshop, Life Centre, Notting Hill, London, Scaravelli, Hatha, Catherine Annis, May, 2016, BackbendWhether you’re a relative newcomer to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, you will have experienced the inspirational power of backbends.  They are a key element of the practice, and help us feel uplifted and inspired.

Backbending is commonly associated with opening the heart, and in particular with opening up the front of our body – the part of us that faces the world. But if we focus solely on this aspect we may lose awareness of some of the deeper supporting structures of the spine:  namely the diaphragm and psoas.  By exploring these ’emotional’ muscles in a series of gradually deepening backbends, we’ll gain important experience of them and, crucially, how our breath provides the bridge between structure and emotion.
