White Space Yoga Studio, Milton Keynes: Yoga Workshop

In October 2016, Scaravelli inspired yoga teacher Catherine Annis was thrilled to have been asked to teach yoga at the White Space Yoga Studio in Milton Keynes.

Clients were asked to come and join Catherine for a day of exploration into yoga as inspired by the teachings of Vanda Scaravelli.  A student of BKS Iyengar, Vanda developed a fresh, nurturing approach to asana practice, focusing on the breath, our contact with and release into gravity, and an understanding of how these elements combine to release and awaken the spine.

During the yoga workshop, Catherine focused particularly on gravity and grounding.  Working in simple and occasionally more complex postures, she looked into ways to develop a deep, quiet attentiveness and inner awareness of how we move into, and within, the asanas.   Rather than pulling and pushing,  she explored the pauses at the end of the exhale, unfolding softly to release muscles and fascia, gently encouraging the spine to open, creating space and lightness through the body. She wanted the clients to observe, reveal and release habitual tensions which may appear in their practice, gradually inviting our movement to become truly free, open and uninhibited.

The key principals of the workshop were to:

  • Discover a clearer understanding of the principles of this approach to yoga, with specific focus on grounding and our response to gravity
  • Understand and explore the mechanics of breath and the spine
  • Develop fresh subtle approaches to adjusting yourself / your students in yoga
